The winning design for the tower was created by Jones & Emmons of Los Angeles and selected by a judging committee headed by architect John Lyon Reid and including Philip L. Boyd and William E. Forbes, UC regants, and architects Alan Siple and Paul A. Thiry... This prospective crowning ornament of the campus is particularly appealing to me, because I remember writing for The Times just a few years ago the story of the new university's opening on a muddy campus in a few bedraggled buildings. The carillon tower thus assumes a great importance as a culminating touch at a university which already has assumed vital importance in California in two important fields in which it has specialized...
